A VPN typically establishes an encrypted tunnel between a client and a gateway, then routes selected traffic through it based on configuration. Connection outcomes depend on operating conditions such as the user’s network path, device state, DNS behavior, firewall rules, and server-side availability.
What a VPN is (and what it is not)
In practical terms, VPNs provide secure transport for data in transit and help centralize how traffic is directed. However, a VPN does not guarantee anonymity, safety, or access to services. Also, performance and availability can vary widely by the client’s network, device, geographic location, provider infrastructure, and even time-of-day congestion.
How it works at an operational level
When a connection succeeds, the client must complete multiple steps: authenticate with correct credentials or certificates, reach the gateway over allowed network routes and ports, resolve the right addresses (often involving DNS), and apply routing rules that decide what traffic goes through the tunnel.
